Biography

He was born on May 17, 1953 in the city of Alma-Ata (now Almaty). Father - Kemel Tokaevich Tokaev (1923-1986), a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, a famous writer, founder of the detective-adventure genre in Kazakh literature. Mother - Turar Shabarbaeva (1931-2000), worked at the Alma-Ata Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.

K.K. Tokaev graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in 1975, underwent a pre-diploma internship at the USSR Embassy in the PRC, and from 1983-1984 did an internship at the Beijing Linguistic Institute. In 1992 he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

He began his career in 1975 at the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was sent to work at the Soviet embassy in the Republic of Singapore. In 1979 he returned to the apparatus of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. In 1984-1985, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, then he was sent to the Soviet Embassy in the People's Republic of China, where he worked until 1991 as second secretary, first secretary and adviser.

In 1992, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1993, he became the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1994, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In March 1999, he became Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In October 1999, with the consent of the Parliament, he was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan by decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In January 2002, he became Secretary of State - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From 2003 to 2007 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In this post, he took an active part in the global process of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

In January 2007, he was elected Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2008, he was elected vice-president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly as the speaker of the upper house of the Kazakh parliament.

In March 2011, he was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Director General of the UN Office in Geneva, as well as Personal Representative of the UN Secretary General at the Conference on Disarmament. He also served as Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament. He was elected chairman of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CIS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

October 16, 2013 re-elected Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

March 20, 2019 took the oath as President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Since 2007, a member of the Nur Otan Party and the Bureau of the Political Council of the Nur Otan Party. Member of the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
